Batanes: Concluding #Project82 at Philippines’ Northernmost Province

Finally arrived at Batanes! 🥰 It’s my dream destination up north. I waited for a year to visit this group of islands as the fare going to this destination is notoriously expensive and your trip will be ruined (hit or a miss) if you’ll visit on monsoon season 😢. Luckily, I was blessed with a beautiful weather that entire trip. What a beautiful Philippines 🇵🇭🥰

Cagayan Valley (Ilocano: Tanap ti Cagayan; Filipino: Lambak ng Cagayan), designated as Region II, is an administrative region in the Philippines. Located in the northeastern section of Luzon, it is composed of five Philippine provinces: Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino. The region hosts four chartered cities: Cauayan, Ilagan, Santiago, and Tuguegarao (the regional center and largest city).

At Batanes, I experienced the slow-pace of life. Waking up in the morning and see the daily life of Ivatans is my norm as the tour commences on the afternoon. Peaceful surroundings in Basco alone, verdant hills and pastures with roaming cattle around, I felt safe walking alone in the streets day and night. Despite high prices of some commodities as most are imported from mainland Luzon (like rice and vegetables), Ivatan people are creative in sustaining life in the islands by consuming fish, cattle and rootcrops. These are shown in their traditional Ivatan dishes in vunong (packed meals). It feels like you’re not in the Philippines. More on like in the fields of New Zealand and rugged cliffs seen in Scotland and Ireland.

Batanes, officially the Province of Batanes (Ivatan: Provinsiya nu Batanes; Ilocano: Probinsia ti Batanes; Filipino: Lalawigan ng Batanes), is an archipelagic province in the Philippines, administratively part of the Cagayan Valley region. It is the northernmost province in the Philippines, and the smallest, both in population and land area. The capital is Basco, located on the island of Batan, and is also the most populous municipality in the province. Batanes is my 82nd province (last province visited), concluding my #project82.

A scenic archipelagic province littered with national cultural treasures and natural scenic spots, in this post, I’ll show the tourist destinations I visited in Batanes over the weekend. I’ll post here in my #project82 the articles related to each province. Presenting my sightseeing itinerary below with Basco Airport as my entry and exit point:

Batanes is subdivided into 6 municipalities, all encompassed by a lone congressional district. North Batan Tour attractions are with Basco. South Batan Tour are comprised of Mahatao, Ivana and Uyugan municipalities. Sabtang Tour attractions are within Sabtang municipality only,. A separate tour Itbayat tour could be availed but is more expensive and entails additional 2-3 days to roam around the remote municipality. Hence, I availed the 4D3N Batanes Tour.
Basco Airport (IATA: BSO, ICAO: RPUO) is an airport serving the province of Batanes in the Philippines. It is located in the provincial capital, Basco. It is one of two airports in the Batanes Islands, the other being Itbayat Airport. The airport is classified as a Class 2 principal (minor) domestic airport by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), a body of the Department of Transportation that is responsible for the operations of non-major airports.
Basco, officially the Municipality of Basco (Ivatan: Kavahayan nu Basco; Ilocano: Ili ti Basco; Tagalog: Bayan ng Basco), is a municipality and capital of the province of Batanes, Philippines. Basco is the most populous town in Batanes and is located on Batan Island, the second largest among the Batanes Islands, the northernmost group of islands of the Philippines. The Basco Lighthouse is one of the landmarks.
The Territorial Prelature of Batanes (in Latin: Praelatura Territorialis Batanensis) is a Latin Church pre-diocesan, non-missionary jurisdiction of the Catholic Church. It is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao on Luzon island in the Philippines.
The Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral is the episcopal seat of the territorial prelate, in Basco, Batanes.

The name Batanes is a Hispanicized and pluralized form of vatan, the indigenous name for the province’s main island, of obscure origin, similar to the etymology of Bataan. The term batang has cognates across various Austronesian languages, mostly being a word that means “the main part of something,” such as “trunk” or “body” (like Batangas). On a more abstract level, the term means “the most important or pre-eminent thing.”

Beautiful Batanes Tourist Brochure given to me by tourguide (from Batanes Provincial Tourism).

Let me take you to a photo journey of my Batanes adventure. Enjoy!
